The contract for the twinning project on ‘Enhancing Road Safety in Egypt Through the Reform of Safety Planning and Operations' was signed on 12 August 2008 by the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport (GARBLT), affiliated to the Ministry of Transport and the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. This twinning project is worth 1,600,000 Euros and its implementation phase will take 24 months.
The project aims to support the economic and social development of Egypt by improving the road transport network and establishing an integrated transportation system that is safe, effective, reliable, interconnected and equitable.
The project activities are grouped into the following main components:
1. Coordination of national road safety activities and legislative reform.
2. Institutional development and capacity building of GARBLT.
3. Upgrading the road safety management system.
